Getting divorced can be one of the most traumatic experiences a person can go through. Ending a marriage can leave people feeling hurt or angry about the past and scared or confused about the future. These can be difficult emotions for any person, but parents who divorce also have all these same emotions on behalf of their child as well.
One of the most troubling fears that parents across Canada may worry about is the potential for a former spouse to violate the terms of a child custody arrangement. This is reportedly a major concern for actor Jeremy Renner.
According to a news source, Renner and his wife are headed toward divorce. The couple has been married for about one year and they have a 21-month-old daughter together. Renner is reportedly concerned that when they are divorced, his wife Sonni Pacheco will take their child from the U.S. to Canada, where Pacheco is from.
Unfortunately, this is a very serious fear for many parents who are divorced or divorcing someone from another country.
Whether a parent is fleeing to or from Canada, the idea that a parent would flee the country with a child against court orders can be extremely troubling. Once a person leaves the country, it can be very difficult to locate that person and bring them back.
Thankfully, there are measures in place to protect parents and kids in cases of international abduction. One such measure is the Hague Abduction Convention. Basically speaking, this is a treaty signed by numerous countries agreeing to help prevent international abductions by facilitating the return of a delinquent parent and child to the country or territory from where he or she was abducted. Canada and the U.S. are both treaty partners.
Whenever a parent violates the terms of a child custody arrangement, there can be a very real fear that a child could be in danger so finding a swift resolution can be essential. Whether a child is kept away from another parent or is taken to a different country, legal support to enforce child custody orders may be crucial.
